Ganesh chaturthi is one of the big Hindu festivals celebrated with great joy & devotion in India. This day is celebrated as Lord Ganesha’s birthday. Ganpati Durva:
There are many interesting stories related to why durva is offered to lord Ganpati. According to Ganesh Puran, once all Gods were invited by Lord Kuber for dinner at his palace. From Shiva’s family Ganesha went for dinner. Kuber is the lord of wealth; he was very proud & arrogant. To break his egoism Ganesha decided to teach him a lesson. The dinner begins Ganpati was served with various delicious foods items. He was please with the food & one by one he finishes all food items. At last there was no food remain in palace Ganesha was still hungry. Now the God of wealth Kuber was embarrassed that he cannot satisfy the hunger of little Ganesha. He rush towards Shiva and requested him how he can satisfy the Ganesha’s hunger. The mother of Ganesha, Parvati gave him a plate of modak and asks him to serve this to Ganpati. After eating a single modak Ganesha was satisfied. Kuber was very embarrassed & he begs Ganesha to forgive him. After eating the huge quantity of food there was a burning sensation in his stomach. Parvati gave him a 21 stack of durva to eat & Ganesha was relieved from the burning sensation. From that time durva appeases lord Ganesha. In Ganesh pujandurva is must.
Ganpati Modak:
Modak is a special sweet offered to Ganesha. It is believed that any offering to Ganpati is incomplete without modak. Modaks are made from rice flour filled with grated coconut & jiggery. It is said that once all Gods came to meet Load Shiva & Goddess Parvati and presented them a divine modak. One who ate the modaks will gain an infinite knowledge in literature, science, arts etc. Parvati wanted to offer these modak to both sons. But Ganesha &Kartike was not at all ready to share it. Parvati was rattled & she said the one who will prove the true meaning of devotion & shows the intelligence will get the modak. Lord Kartik immediately moves up on to his vahana peacock & rushed to various spiritual places. But the Lord of wisdom Ganesha went around his Parents Lord Shiva & Parvati and said no quantity of any offering, fasting or visiting various spiritual places is equal to devotion & love of parents. Shiva & Parvati was fully impressed & presented him a divine modaks.
